When might prescription treatment be considered?
For adults, some prescription weight-management medicines are licensed for consideration alongside dietary change and physical activity when the initial BMI is:
Examples of relevant conditions can include high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. These are licensing thresholds, not a promise that treatment is safe, suitable or available. NHS/NICE access criteria are separate and generally narrower.
It is not designed for pregnancy, anyone under 18, people with a diagnosed or suspected eating disorder, or people with a condition that substantially affects height. BMI should also be interpreted cautiously in very muscular people and some older adults. Contact an appropriate clinician if you are concerned about unexplained weight change.
